Now
A short, periodically updated snapshot, in the spirit of now pages. Last updated: October 2026.
Research
- Planning cycle networks. I lead development of the Network Planning Tool for Scotland, funded by Transport Scotland and developed with Sustrans, and work on methods for designing core networks, such as Corenet.
- Safer routes to school. With colleagues at the University of Lisbon, the BICISCHOOLS project develops open methods to plan cycling routes and bike buses to schools.
- Open mobility data. Tools such as spanishoddata make large origin-destination datasets usable on a laptop.
- Road safety and street design. Recent work includes outdoor lighting and active travel and identifying rat-runs.

- SaferActive: data-driven methods for cyclist and pedestrian safety.
- Geocomputation with R and Geocomputation with Python: free, open-source books on geographic data science.
Teaching
I lead the Transport Data Science module at the University of Leeds.
Collaboration
I welcome conversations about reproducible transport data science, open-source software and evidence for sustainable transport. See ways to get in touch, including for prospective students and collaborators.
